Sayagyi Dr. Soe Lwin
The leading patron of Visuddhimag Dhamma Laan Centers, Sayagyi Dr. Soe Lwin, was born in 1958 to his father, U Than Aung, and mother, Daw Win May. In 1982, he received a doctor's degree from the Institute of Medicine (Mandalay).
From 1989 to 1990, Sayagyi worked at the Nanshei Mandalay Jivita Sangha Hospital, which was established and opened by Mingun Sayadawgyi. In 1991, he got married to Daw Shweyi Hla and had a daughter Ma Htoo Yi Lwin. Dr. Soe Lwin lived in Yangon and Mandalay after his marriage.
From 1990 to 1991, Sayagyi read and studied Dhamma literature. He read books written by Mingun Sayadawgyi, Sunlun Sayadawgyi, Webu Sayadawgyi, Mogok Sayadawgyi, Mahasi Sayadawgyi, Taung-myo Mahagandhayon Sayadawgyi, Pakokku Sayadawgyi (Anicca Sayadaw), and Pa-auk Sayadawgyi. In addition, he studied the Burmese translation of the Tipitaka (ancient collections of Buddhist sacred scriptures) as well as treatises (dipani) written by Ledi Sayadawgyi.
In 2004, he started practicing Vipassana meditation and attained insightful understanding of the Dhamma. In 2006, he began discussing the basic concepts of Vipassana with his friends in Mandalay and Yangon. In 2009, he wrote and distributed a Dhamma book titled "Let's Walk the Dhamma Path (Dhamma Laan)" at a Teacher Offering Ceremony organized by the 1976-82 alumni of the Institute of Medicine (Mandalay), thus bringing his teachers and friends to the Dhamma path.
One of the unique features of this group of alumni was that as they got older, they gradually came to practice meditation, and these friends who were interested in the Dhamma came together to establish the "Visuddhimag Dhamma Laan Vipassana Organization."
In 2020, the government of the Union of Myanmar awarded Sayagyi the title of "Mahāsaddhamma Jotikadhaja" due to his spiritual missionary work. This title means "‘Great Expounder of the True Dhamma."
How Dhamma Laan Was Conceived
In March 2006, Saya Dr. Soe Lwin started discussing Dhamma with his schoolmates at Kant Kaw Hospital owned by his friend U Kyaw Oo + Dr. Nang Tin Htay and situated at the corner of 30th and 73rd Roads in Mandalay. Starting from these discussion sessions, alumni from the 1976-82 academic year of the Institute of Medicine (Mandalay) - Dr. Thet Lwin, Dr. Sein Hla Min, Dr. Aye Soe, Dr. Sein Myint, Dr. Win Aung, Dr. Khin Maung Aye, Dr. Kyaw Tint, Dr. Hla Soe Nyunt, Dr. Nan Tin Tin Htay, Dr. Ma Htay Win, Dr. Thi Thi, Dr. Mi Mi and Dr. San San Win - got together and were able to build the foundation for the Dhamma Laan Vipassana group.
Similarly, in October 2006, at Dr. Shwe Tun's home in Yangon, Dr. Khin Maung Phyu, Dr. Aung Zaw, Dr. Tin Swe, Dr. Aung Kyaw Win, Dr. Ne Win, Dr. Myint Lwin (Hopin), Dr. Kyu Kyu, Dr. Tin Tin Win, Dr. Kyi Kyi San and other friends got together and participated in discussing the Dhamma with Saya Dr. Soe Lwin.
Through this, Saya's friends were able to gather together as the Dhamma Laan group. In Mandalay, friends would gather together and discuss dhamma with Saya at Dr. Aye Soe + Daw Saw Kyi Htoo's home, at Dr. Thi Thi's residence, and at the home of U Tin Hlaing + Daw Yu Wai during Thingyan festival days, the weekend school holidays and the Teacher Offering Ceremony days in December. In Yangon, his friends gathered and discussed Dhamma with Saya at Dr. Shwe Tun's and Dr. Khin Maung Phyu's homes every weekend. From 2006 to 2010, Saya traveled to and fro Yangon and Mandalay and shared the Dhamma he understood with his friends.
While engaging in Dhamma study and practice, his friends such as Dr. Thet Lwin, Dr. Sein Hla Min, Dr. Aye Soe, Dr. Sein Myint, Dr. Thi Thi, and Dr. Sein Myint contributed 100,000 kyats each to establish a fund to allow for video/audio recording and publishing of the dhamma teachings by Saya Dr. Soe Lwin.
In December 2009, Saya was able to present the book "Let's Walk the Dhamma Path (Dhamma Laan)" to his teachers and friends and bring them to the spiritual path at the Tenth Teacher Offering Ceremony of the alumni of the academic year 1976-82. Named after the book "Let's Walk the Dhamma Path (Dhamma Laan)“, Saya and his friends formed a group called "The Dhamma Laan Group."
