This concept is a very important key to understanding our mental processes and practically applying Vipassana.<\/p>\n<h2>The Meaning of Preceding Mind and Subsequent Mind<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Preceding Mind refers to the <strong>effects<\/strong> that arise naturally at the six sense doors\u2014eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind\u2014whenever a sense object collides with a sense organ. For example, <strong>seeing consciousness<\/strong> arising from the collision of the eye and a visual object, or <strong>hearing consciousness<\/strong> arising from the collision of the ear and sound, are Preceding Minds. These Preceding Minds arise as the Five Aggregates\u2014<strong>Consciousness, Mind &amp; Matter, Six Sense Bases, Contact, and Feeling<\/strong>\u2014and they are the objects of observation, the Truth of Suffering (Dukkha Sacca).<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Subsequent Mind is the mind that arises at the mind door (Mano) after the Preceding Mind has arisen and ceased, taking the object left by that Preceding Mind as its condition. Because the Subsequent Mind only gets to know the object of the Preceding Mind, in seeing, hearing, smelling, eating, touching, and thinking, the mind knows only the object of the Preceding Mind. <\/strong>\u1016\u103c\u1005\u103a\u1000\u103c\u1015\u102b\u101e\u100a\u103a\u104b<\/p>\n<h2>Effect and Cause<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Preceding Mind is an <strong>effect (result)<\/strong> and has absolutely nothing to do with \"you\" (your control). Preceding Mind is merely the <strong>Resultant Aggregate (Vipaka Khandha)<\/strong> arising due to past Karma. Between cause and effect, the cause concerns you, but the effect does not concern you at all. The effect only concerns the cause. Effects arise naturally according to their own nature only because of the completeness and alignment of causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Subsequent Mind is a <strong>cause<\/strong>, and it concerns you. Present causes, in the context of <strong>Dependent Origination (Paticcasamuppada)<\/strong>, are <strong>Ignorance, Craving, Clinging, Formations, and Karma<\/strong>. You are concerned only with these causes. After Preceding Minds such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and thinking have arisen and ceased, the Subsequent Mind\u2014regarding the object it gets to know\u2014generates <strong>wrong knowledge of it as a person or being<\/strong> (Ignorance), <strong>delight in that object<\/strong> (Craving), and <strong>attachment to that object as 'I' or 'Mine'<\/strong> (Clinging). This leads to exertion through <strong>physical, verbal, and mental formations<\/strong>, creating <strong>Wholesome and Unwholesome Karma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Preceding Arising and Passing, Subsequent is the Path<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Observing Preceding Mind with Subsequent Mind is <strong>Vipassana<\/strong>. It is called <strong>Contemplation of Mind (Cittanupassana)<\/strong>. If the Consciousness and Mind-Matter of the Preceding Mind are the objects of observation, the Subsequent Mind is the <strong>Observing Wisdom (The Five Factors of the Path)<\/strong>. However, when <strong>Clinging (Upadana)<\/strong> attaches to the Preceding Mind, that Clinging becomes the object of observation, and knowing that Clinging has attached is the Observing Wisdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Therefore, in the minds of worldlings (puthujjana), since <strong>Wrong View and Craving<\/strong> have not yet been eradicated, consciousnesses that arise due to colliding conditions in seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and thinking are always present as objects of observation. The main point is simply to be able to observe with the Subsequent Mind (the Path Factors) whether <strong>Clinging attaches or does not attach<\/strong> to these arisen minds. If Clinging attaches, Clinging is the object of observation; if Clinging does not attach, the Preceding Mind (Consciousness and Mind-Matter) is the object of observation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Clinging is the Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Samudaya Sacca), and the <strong>wisdom that knows Clinging<\/strong> is the Truth of the Path (Magga Sacca). <strong>If the Truth of the Path enters, the Truth of the Origin ceases.<\/strong> Two minds cannot exist simultaneously in the mind door. Therefore, if the Path enters the mind, the Origin (Clinging) <strong>ceases momentarily (Tadanga)<\/strong>. <strong>Knowing the arising and passing of the Origin is the Path.<\/strong> Knowing Clinging as Clinging counts as the Path and is <strong>Vipassana<\/strong>. The <strong>Observing Wisdom is the Truth of the Path<\/strong>, and the <strong>Object of Observation is the Truth of the Origin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Living with Only One Mind at a Time<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In a human, there are <strong>six locations<\/strong> where consciousness arises: Eye, Ear, Nose, Tongue, Body, and Mind. Seeing consciousness arises at the eye, hearing at the ear, smelling at the nose, tasting at the tongue, touching at the body, and thinking at the mind. <strong>Except for Mind Consciousness (Mano Vinyana), the other consciousnesses cannot produce Karma.<\/strong> <strong>Physical action, Verbal action, and Mental action<\/strong> arise only because of Mind Consciousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">When seeing consciousness happens, the other (5) consciousnesses do not happen. Similarly, if hearing consciousness happens, other consciousnesses do not happen. If thinking consciousness happens, there is no consciousness at the eye, ear, nose, tongue, or body. <strong>We live with only one mind at a time.<\/strong> Knowing that seeing consciousness has happened is because there is an observing consciousness at the mind door. At that moment, the seeing consciousness is gone. One lives only with the observing Mind Consciousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Thus, <strong>seeing consciousness then observing consciousness, hearing consciousness then observing consciousness, smelling consciousness then observing consciousness, tasting consciousness then observing consciousness, touching consciousness then observing consciousness, thinking consciousness then observing consciousness<\/strong>\u2014this process of one mind arising and ceasing after another is called \"living.\" These minds are not permanent either. They are <strong>Non-Self (Anatta) natural phenomena<\/strong> that arise anew based on conditions and the respective sense doors, taking their own nature.<\/p>\n<h2>Do Not Fear Clinging; Fear Not Knowing It<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In those who have not yet eradicated Ignorance, Craving, and Clinging, Clinging will naturally attach to objects that arise due to conditions. <strong>The nature of Dhamma is Anatta.<\/strong> You cannot control Clinging according to your will. Clinging is <strong>not Self (Atta), it is Non-Self (Anatta)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and thinking, if the object is something to be attached to, Clinging will naturally attach. However, Clinging does not happen every time we see. For example, when riding in a car, we see cars, houses, people, and trees along the road, but if Clinging does not attach, not even Mental Action (Mano Kamma) occurs. If one can <strong>focus to see Clinging with Mindfulness<\/strong>, as soon as one knows Clinging has attached, the <strong>knowledge of the arising and passing of Clinging becomes the Path<\/strong>. One can <strong>momentarily abandon<\/strong> Clinging, and the <strong>momentary Vipassana Path Consciousness<\/strong> can enter.<\/p>\n<h2>Seeing Preceding Mind and Subsequent Mind in Clinging, and Karma cease.<\/strong> In the <strong>Dhammacakka Sutta<\/strong>, the <strong>Truth of Cessation is the cessation of Craving.<\/strong> Therefore, if the Path can enter in the Subsequent Mind, because the Truth of the Origin (Craving) ceases, <strong>Cessation is reached.<\/strong> If one can contemplate in this way, one can see and know the Truth of the Path and the Truth of Cessation through <strong>Vipassana Wisdom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If so, since Craving ceases at the <strong>moment the Path arises<\/strong>, that Vipassana Path Mostly, one cannot see the Truth of Suffering first. <strong>In the nature of the world, Suffering is covered by the Origin (Samudaya).<\/strong> Therefore, one should look to see the <strong>Origin, which is Clinging,<\/strong> first. By observing the <strong>Truth of the Origin<\/strong> first, Clinging thins out, pierces through Ignorance, and one will be able to see the Truth of Suffering of Mind and Matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Therefore, <strong>beginners in Vipassana should practice by observing the Truth of the Origin as the object.<\/strong> Only when the <strong>cover of the Origin<\/strong> can be opened will one find the Truth of Suffering. Then, one must practice until the <strong>Ultimate Mind and Matter of the Truth of Suffering cease and end.<\/strong> <strong>The cessation of Mind and Matter is Nibbana.<\/strong> Only when one can realize Nibbana face-to-face can the Origin be completely eradicated.
